Head Coach Mal Meninga

Mal Meninga is among the most revered figures in rugby league.

Inducted as the 13th Immortal of the game in 2018, he has earned a stellar reputation as both a player and a coach.

During his illustrious playing career, he broke numerous records at both club and international level and captained the Canberra Raiders to three premierships. He also played 46 Test and World Cup matches for Australia and appeared in 32 State of Origin games for Queensland.

After hanging up his boots, Meninga coached the Raiders from 1997-2001 before taking over as the coach of Queensland in 2006. His time in charge of the Maroons was their most successful in State of Origin history, with the team winning nine of the 10 series in which he was at the helm. Meninga then went on to coach Australia, leading the Kangaroos to World Cup victories in 2017 and 2022.

He was announced as the inaugural Head Coach of the Perth Bears in June 2025, saying it was “one of the most exciting challenges of my career”.

Assistant Coach Ben Gardiner

Ben Gardiner has one of the most extensive and impressive coaching CVs in the game.

For more than two decades he has held coaching roles at top clubs including the Sydney Roosters, the Cronulla Sharks, the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Wests Tigers.

Most recently he was an assistant coach at the Penrith Panthers and was part of the club’s premiership-winning years of 2023 and 2024. Gardiner is also the coach of the Samoa national team.

He has a deep connection with the North Sydney Bears, having previously been head coach at the club in the NSW Cup.

Gardiner was announced as Assistant Coach of the Perth Bears in June 2025.

“I can’t wait to work closely with new people in Western Australia and build a hugely successful team over the next five years as we promote rugby league and grow the game,” he said.
