About This Project

The Perth Bears are seeking a West Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist to create artwork for the club’s inaugural National Rugby League (NRL) Indigenous jersey, with scope for broader application across club assets and communication materials.

Artwork Brief

The Perth Bears are looking for an original artwork that celebrates and embraces any combination of the following themes:

  • Connection to Country in Western Australia and cultural storytelling
  • Family, community, unity and strength
  • The journey of rugby league in Western Australia, including the heritage of the North Sydney Bears and the future of the Perth Bears
  • The Perth Bears values: Bold, Accountable, Selfless, Empowered and Resourceful

 

The selected artwork will be adapted for use on the Perth Bears Indigenous jersey, with the potential for use across other assets, including retail products.

The design must complement the existing Perth Bears branding.

Who Can Apply?

  • Applicants must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists or designers aged 18 years and over, or Aboriginal-led and/or Aboriginal-owned businesses, with a strong connection to Western Australia.
  • Applicants may be emerging, mid-career or established artists.
  • All applicants must also have availability to commit to the project timeframe and deliverables.

Submission Requirements

  1. Artist bio (400 words) – outline your background, artistic practice, and connection to Western Australia
  2. Concept – provide initial concept artwork in digital format, suitable for application on a jersey to be worn during the NRL Indigenous Round from 2027. The selected artist will be required to collaborate with the Perth Bears during the project timeframe to refine the concept based on feedback, prior to finalisation of the artwork.
  3. Supporting rational (300 words) – provide a written story explaining the meaning of the artwork
  4. Acknowledgement of Terms and Conditions and confirmed availability during the timings outlined.

Selection Criteria

EOIs will be evaluated by an internal selection committee. The committee will assess submissions against the following:

  • Strength and originality of the artistic vision
  • Demonstrated connection to Western Australian Aboriginal culture
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality work on time
  • Alignment with the themes outlined in the brief
  • Suitability for application to a jersey and other products, including alignment with the Perth Bears brand

Terms and Conditions

  • The selected artist will receive a total fee of $5,000, with $1,000 payable upon delivery of the initial design and $4,000 payable upon delivery of the final artwork.
  • The artist may be required to confirm Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity by statutory declaration.
  • The artist will be required to enter into a confidentiality agreement and work collaboratively with the Perth Bears throughout the project, including refining the concept and incorporating feedback prior to finalisation.
  • The artist waives any moral rights they may have in their submitted artwork
  • The Perth Bears reserve the right to amend, terminate, cancel or vary the EOI process at any time and for any reason
  • The artist warrants that the artwork is original and does not infringe any third-party intellectual property rights or cultural rights.
  • The artist grants the Perth Bears a worldwide, royalty-free licence to use submitted application materials for the purposes of assessment, selection, promotion, announcement and related commercial activities, including the NRL Indigenous jersey and merchandise, including retail offerings.
  • Ownership and all intellectual property rights in the final approved artwork (including concepts and drafts) will be assigned to the Perth Bears upon final payment,
  • Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) rights remain with the artist and/or relevant custodians and are not transferred.
  • The final artwork will be subject to approval by the NRL prior to use.
  • The artist will provide any cultural or usage restrictions relating to the artwork, including colour and cropping considerations.
  • The final artwork must be supplied in high-resolution format (minimum 300dpi), in AI or EPS format, suitable for print and digital reproduction.
  • The artwork may be used across Perth Bears assets including game day, merchandise, signage, digital and corporate communications, including broadcast, media coverage, archival purposes and perpetual digital use across all platforms.
  • The artist will be appropriately credited.
  • The artist may be required to participate in promotional activities in the lead-up to and during Indigenous Round (details to be confirmed).
  • The Perth Bears reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any application and prohibit further participation in this Expression of Interest process where an applicant tampers with the application process, breaches these Terms and Conditions, or engages in conduct that is misleading, disruptive, or otherwise inappropriate.
  • The Perth Bears are not liable for any late, lost, incomplete, misdirected, delayed or illegible applications or correspondence due to error, omission, tampering, theft or other causes beyond their control.

 

About the Perth Bears

The Perth Bears are a professional rugby league club based in Perth, Western Australia, entering the expanded NRL competition in 2027.

The club honours the proud heritage of the North Sydney Bears while establishing a new chapter for rugby league in Western Australia. The Perth Bears’ colours remain the traditional red and black, with white added as a secondary colour, reflecting both history and a bold future for the club.

The Perth Bears acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we play and train and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
