Australian International and 2025 NRL premiership hero Gehamat Shibasaki has signed with the Perth Bears alongside NSW Under 19s representative Jope Rauqe in the club’s latest recruitment blitz.
Shibasaki had a breakout season in 2025 claiming a premiership with the Brisbane Broncos, State of Origin success with the QLD Maroons and an Ashes victory with the Australian Kangaroos.
He scored two tries and had three line-breaks in the famous Broncos grand final win.
The 28-year-old will look to bring that success to Perth next year when he joins the Bears for their inaugural season.
A powerful ball runner and strong defender, Perth Bears Head Coach Mal Meninga said Shibasaki will bring class and experience to the squad.
“Gehamat has been on our radar for some time and I’m delighted that he has decided to continue his career with the Bears,” Meninga said.
“He is a Test player who will add a new dimension to our backline. He is large, strong and has big game experience that will be invaluable.
“Most important of all, Gehamat has the character and personality that the Perth Bears are looking for.
“He has persevered for a long time and ultimately that led to success. I’m excited to welcome him and his family as part of our squad.”
For Shibasaki, the Perth Bears provide an opportunity to break new ground and be a part of rugby league history in WA.
“It’s an honour to have the opportunity to play for the Perth Bears in their first season,” Shibasaki said.
“I believe in Mal’s vision for the club and I’m excited about the opportunity to play for him and the club next year.
“The squad is shaping up well and I’m confident we can make an immediate impact.”
Joining Shibasaki in Perth next year will be teenage outside back prodigy Rauqe.
The 19-year-old winger made his Test debut for Fiji last year and in June was selected in the NSW Under 19s team.
“Jope is an outstanding prospect who has incredible natural talent and ability,” Meninga said.
“He is tall, athletic and an absolute try scorer. He will bring energy and excitement to our squad and can make a real impact”.
A graduate of Holy Cross College, Rauqe said the Bears provide him with the best opportunity to develop and progress his NRL career.
“The Perth Bears are building something special and I’m excited to be a part of it,” he said.
“I believe this is the best opportunity to continue my development as a Rugby League player and I can’t wait to get to work with Mal and his staff.”
Perth Bears GM of Football Gareth Holmes believes Shibasaki and Rauqe will both play an integral part of the roster for next season.
“Gehamat is a premiership winning International who will bring experience and class to our squad next year,” he said.
“Jope will join Mason Barber, Jasais Ah Kee and Apa Twidle as players we can really look to build our future around.
“I’m thrilled both have agreed to join the Bears next year and I am confident we will have some more big announcements in the coming weeks.”
